About Aerogel
Aerogel is known as the lightest solid material in the world at present.It has the characters of nano pores(1~100nm),low density,low dielectric constant(1.1~2.5),low thermal conductivity(0.013~0.025W?(m·K)),high porosity(80~99.8%),high specific surface area(200~1000㎡/g) etc., which makes it showing special quality for mechanics, acoustical,thermal,optical and showing promising future in Aerospace,Military,Transportation, Telecom,Medical,Construction,Electronics and Metallurgy areas etc., so it is named as "Magical material changing the world"
Silica aerogel is known as the best material for insulation at present.The diameters of pores in aerogel is smaller than the mean free path of air molecules,so the air molecules in aerogel is almost in static situation,which avoid the air convection leading to the heat loss: And the low density character and the nano net structure of bent path in aerogel also effectively stop the heat transmit in bith solid and air way,moreover,the infinity of pore walls in aerogel could reduce the thermal radiation to the minimum.Basing on the above three characters,it almost stops all the heat transmit ways and makes aerogel the best insulating effect comparing with other insulations, for its thermal conductivity is lower than 0.013W/m·K,even much lower than that of static air 0.025W/m·K in normal temperature.
